The fake smile was on Sorina's face the second she stepped into the two-story, rambling building known as Amenia High School. It was, in fact, the exact same fake smile she had been wearing for ten years now, ever since her entire family life went wrong. She would have thought, with all the friends she had pretended to have, one of them would have seen how fake and cheesy it was. It certainly felt fake and cheesy. But no one did - no one saw Sorina for who she was. She was simply the perfect sixteen-year-old girl. Struggling with demons from her past? With a mother that vanished and left her with an abusive, drinking father who hospitalized her at age ten and then shot himself in the head? Never. She was perfect. All A's, friendly, warm, the best possible friend to just about everyone in this crappy school in this God-forsaken, undead creature-infested region she had grown up in. That everyone had grown up in. No one came from the outside - if such a thing was even possible. How would that work out, anyway? How could that work out? Someone who came from the rational world? A world that wrought vampires, werewolves, and witches into every game, every movie, every book. The only books they read on such creatures in Amenia were thick nonfictions on how to ward off these creatures. How to protect yourself from them - if protecting yourself from ultra-powerful creatures of the night was even possible. Imagine someone coming to live who knew nothing of the dark creatures that surrounded them. Would they think they were surrounded by a bunch of lunatics? Would they eventually come to realize that the creatures they delighted in in a world that made sense were real, and only considered science fiction there because they were bound here? Who knew how an outsider would respond? That was precisely why Amenia had never known outsiders. Sorina padded down the hallways, keeping the same front as always - that nothing could be going better for her. In truth, nothing could be going worse. She wished there was one person who saw her for who she was - hurt, damaged. But no one would ever would. Her pretense was too good; after all, it had served her for ten years. She had experience with covering up her true feelings, and no one was perceptive enough to see past her masquerade. For now, it was just another High school year for Sorina Lettiere. Just another year or pretending to be who she wasn't, pretending she was happy, cheerful, and confident to cover up that she was sad, confused, and afraid. Tenth grade. She was a junior. And she was beginning just another year of complete fakeness.

This year was going to be hard for Dawn. With just moving in with Sorina and her family, all Dawn could think about is the guy who saved her from the witch coven. She still couldn't believe he didn't stay, not even to say hello. While in her thoughts, Dawn bumped into Sorina.

Sorina smirked and leaned against the wall, raising her eyebrows at the other girl. If there had ever been any hope for anyone to see through the impenetrable mask she always wore, it would have been her best friend and adoptive sister, Dawn. But Dawn, preoccupied with her own quests - which she refused to reveal even to Sorina, although she knew she wasn't disappearing to skating rinks after homework every day - had not noticed anything amiss. As with everyone else, she thought that Sorina had put her troubled past behind her. None of her thoughts reflecting on the outside, Sorina said casually, "Hey, sis. Clumsy as always, I see."

Dawn smiled. "You know it. How would you like to hear about my project? I could use some help."

Sorina smirked and pulled out a hairbow, throwing her long golden-blonde hair back into a loose ponytail. "Would this be the project that accounts for you disappearing whenever you don't have school or homework? Because you're very unobservant if you think I haven't noticed."

"Well... yes. It is. You can help only if you promise not to tell anyone!"

"I promise, Dawn. Your secret's safe with me." Who would I trust enough to tell, anyway? she thought dryly. My other so-called "friends"?

"Okay, meet me at the park at 7 o'clock. Bring running gear... and garlic."

Sorina raised her eyebrows. She's dealing with vampires? With a sigh, she nodded to Dawn and shouldered the bag containing her books into a more comfortable position on her shoulder. "That gives me three hours to do homework. See you there, Dawn. I've gotta get to class, or my new teachers will crucify me." She rolled her eyes - classic teenager look. Of course, Sorina the average teenager - or not. Today would be even harder than usual. Now she was balancing not only the pretense of normality and the demons of her past, but also worry for whatever situation her sister Dawn had gotten herself into - a situation involving vampires, apparently. She turned with a decisive spin and trotted down the hallway. The first day of the rest of what would most likely be a suckish life for her - but she had already reconciled herself with that fact. She just hoped Dawn wasn't in too much trouble.

"Hey, sis," Dawn called after her. "I hope you know I have a connection with a vampire, and we are meeting my friend's friend witch named... uh... Angel."

Sorina paused, looking over her shoulder. "Dear, dear sister... what have you got yourself into this time?" She vanished around the corner of the hallway. That day passed about the same way every other day ever had. She charmed every teacher she met immediately, and met two new girls, Jenna and Lily. As always, no one saw past her. Her mind absorbed what few things are actually learned on the first day of school, storing them away in a vault in her mind. She could open it and pull out the information as she needed. As the first day ended on the same note as always, Sorina headed straight for the park. It was time to meet Dawn, her witch friend, and her vampire connection. "What have you gotten yourself into this time, sister?" she murmured to herself, exiting the school and beginning the short walk home.

Dawn exited the high school. Maybe next time I can learn something, she thought dryly, instead of skipping class and standing in the hall like a bananna tree.

I walked up to Sorina. I was shaking because I was so extremely nervous to tell her what was on my mind. "Hey," I said softly to her.

"Hi." My eyes narrowed. "What's wrong?" I asked automatically.

I first wanted to tell her the thing that made me most happy. So I held up my hand to show her the ring. "I'm engaged," I said very softly. I was smiling brightly but biting my lip to try to calm myself.
