"Well." With her usual coy smile, Lacey drew back the knife, aiming it straight at Crystal's chest. "Sayonara, sweetheart," she chimed in her bell-like voice, drawing it back yet further in preparation for the fatal lunge.
"Stop," a girl's voice cut in, so sharply and suddenly that Lacey paused for a moment. Sorina stepped lightly into view, her arms crossed firmly over her chest. Her eyes flashed with the usual fire, but her voice held only a quiet resignation. "If you kill her," she said, with a tilt of the head to indicate Crystal, "then I'm sure you know the effects will wear off sooner or later. Okay, yes, Lucian loves her, no one can deny that... but like he would a little sister. Eventually, he would move on" She spread her arms. "I, on the other hand..."
"Sorina," Lucian whispered hoarsely. The horror was evident in his voice, but he couldn't stop her. By now everyone present knew her plan, so she spoke it out loud, staring evenly into Lacey's bright, cold blue eyes. "So kill me instead, Lacey," she whispered. "And you win this entire three-year-long feud. I think you know that."
"Sunny, no..." Lucian whispered from behind her. She turned to look at him. He was standing rigid, frozen, his blue eyes wide. She smile a little, lightly. "It's okay," she murmured, and then suddenly felt an iron grip on her forearm. She winced as Lacey spun her around, looking directly into her bright gaze. She knew the psychopathic vampire well enough by now to know that if she thought she had her revenge on Lucian, she would leave them all alone. Crystal, Shadow, Dawn, her children - all of them would be safe. Relatively, anyway. It would hurt them, but it would also help to keep them a live. Surely the loss of life wasn't that much in comparison to all the lives of people she loved that would be saved.
"Such nobility," Lacey purred. "You're sure?"
She looked away. She didn't want that perfect vampire face to be the last thing she saw before dying. "Doesn't really matter, does it? Eventually I'll die whether I'm ready or not."
"Wise answer." Lacey giggled, and then she suddenly felt the knife slip right between her ribs. She gasped, but she didn't scream, or even cry out.
Everything after that seemed to happen in a blur, as if she were merely observing from a distance. She felt Lacey shove her forward; the knife slice the back of her neck as she fell, probably to ensure her death. n her peripheral vision, she saw the redheaded vampire slip quietly away from the scene, swiftly as a wraith.
Lucian caught her gently in his arms before she could hit the ground - and the warmth of his body suddenly brought reality crashing back. She was mortally, fatally wounded, drenched in blood, her world spinning around her in shades of light and dark. Her vision kept focusing and unfocusing... but what she didn't feel was any pain. It didn't hurt. That was strange... she must be too close to death to still feel. Physically, anyway.
She suddenly became aware of Lucian shaking her frantically, and as she looked up she realized he was speaking. "Sunny, please - il mio dolce sole - look at me." She did, and realized his expression was filled with horror. "Just stay with me, okay?"
"Wish I could," she whispered hoarsely. "Too late."
"Sunny - "
"I love you," she whispered. She felt the tension ease out of his body as he realized as well that it was too late. Slowly, he sank to his knees, keeping his arms wrapped around her to lift her off the floor. "Sunny, please.."
"It's okay. You'll come with me, remember?"
"Doesn't really make it hurt less." He sighed. "I love you, too."
"I would hope so," she said, so much of the typical sarcastic irony in her voice that she saw him blink in surprise. "You did marry me." She lay her head against his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat, then stared up into his usually-crystal blue eyes, deepened by emotion to sapphire. Guess I don't have to die looking at Lacey after all. She smirked. Death in the ams of the person I love. Funny... I never thought it would be so poetic. With those last thoughts, she closed her eyes softly, and finally let the darkness take her.
The deep blue of Lucian's eyes haunted even the dreams that carried her down into thenothingness.
{Lucian} "Sunny..." I pulled her up, close to me, burying my face in her blood-soaked hair, closely cradling the body of my fallen soulmate and waiting, anticipating the soulmate principle to kick in and take me with her... it didn't. I blinked and lifted my head, and for a moment my heart soared as I thought, Maybe she's still alive; I caressed her cheek lightly with one finger, half-expecting her to blink open her eyes and look at me with the blazing fire I knew her for as she demanded what the hell I was doing - but she stayed completely limp and cold, more limp and cold than Sunny could ever feel, vampire or not.
She was dead. It was just, for some inexplicable reason, I wasn't joining her.
Sunny... I couldn't say the name out loud this time; my heart was in my throat and choking me, not allowing speech. I held her close again, not even stopping to question the sobs that racked my body. It was a strange feeling, the grief - like some creature was ripping apart my insides, injecting poison into my heart. With each beat, it sent fresh waves of agony all the way throughout my body. I stopped crying after a few moments; the grief was too intense, too internal to truly be expressed by tears. Now I understood whythe soulmate principle would always have two people die together - because the pain of one without the other was too much to bear. Whatever the reason I hadn't worked, I wished more than anything that it would. "Riposare in pace, pieno di sole," I whispered brokenly, staring for another few moments at her pale, lifeless face, and then I lowered my head and let myself succumb to the misery.
